General Safety Precautions

Dayton recommends reading and understanding all the instructions and warnings given by the manufacturer before operating their heaters. The below instructions will guide you to the safe operation of Dayton torpedo heaters.

Fuelling

  • Always use Kerosene or #1 fuel oil to minimize the risk of explosion or fire. Don’t ever use paint thinners, gasoline, alcohol, naphtha, or highly flammable fuels.
  • Use only the fuel type specified on the heater’s data plate.
  • If there’s any flame, extinguish it first and allow the heater to cool before fueling.
  • All fuel storage should be placed away from the heater, maintaining a distance of at least 25ft. The only exception is the fuel reservoir integrated with the heater.
  • Heaters used in the vicinity of the canvas, tarps, or similar enclosure materials should be placed at a minimum safe distance of 10ft from these materials.

Other Safety Information

  • Use the heater only in well-ventilated areas.

Note: It’s recommended to render a minimum of 3 square feet of fresh air for each 100,000 Btu/Hr of rating.

  • Ensure that the heating area is free of combustible vapors or high dust content.
  • Use your heater unit with the electrical voltage and frequency mentioned on the model plate.
  • Make use of only a three-prong, grounded extension cord.
  • Place your unit on a stable and level surface while running or hot. Otherwise, it can cause a fire.
  • Keep the heater in a level position while storing or moving it to prevent fuel spillage.
  • Make sure to unplug the heater when not in use.
  • Avoid using the heater in sleeping or living areas.
  • Don’t ever block the heater’s air outlet (front) or air inlet (rear).
  • Never refuel, move or service the unit when it’s hot, plugged in, or operating.
  • Don’t attach ductwork to the rear or front of your heater.
